The following are a few features that make gate valves unique in the family of valves. The unique feature involves the availability of a gate or disc that runs across the flow direction inside the valve body. This gate can be rigid or, more specifically, elastic and has a specific beneficial application. Also known as deflecting slab valves, gate valves are primarily used for open or shut positions, offering little or no resistance to the flow while offering a very tight shut-off when it is shut.

Due to this fact, gate valves are best used in applications requiring them to open or close rather than reduce the flow of fluids. Their structure is also very simple and strong, which gives them the advantage of being widely used in high-pressure and high-temperature fluid control in several industry fields. The gate stem is normally positioned above the valve to identify its position always. However, gate valves might not be the best for throttling because they are noisy and undergo erosion, and their operation time is longer than the time required for operation ball or globe valves.
