| Component | Description |
| Body | The main shell that holds everything and lets fluid flow through. Made of steel, brass, plastic, etc. depending on use. |
| Bonnet | The cover for the valve body that lets you access the inside parts. Usually bolted or screwed on. |
| Trim | All the replaceable inner parts that touch the flowing fluid - includes disc/plug, seat, stem, and sometimes bushings. |
| Disc/Plug/Ball/Gate | The moving part that opens, closes, or controls flow. Different names for different valve types. |
| Seat | The fixed surface inside where the disc/plug sits to stop flow. Can be soft (rubber-like) or hard (metal). |
| Stem | The rod connecting the handle/actuator to the disc/plug to move it open or closed. |
| Actuator/Handwheel/Lever | The part you operate - could be a handle you turn, a lever, or a powered device. |
| Packing/Gasket | Sealing material around the stem to prevent leaks. |
| Gland | The part that squeezes the packing tight to ensure a good seal. |
| Fasteners | Bolts and nuts used to hold the body and bonnet together and secure other parts. |
